Changing lives and public policy

The Seattle Times has an established track record of digging deep to tackle urgent community issues head-on, surfacing viable solutions and creating change that has a direct impact on our region. Seattle Times investigations have saved local lives from dangerous painkillers, protected vulnerable seniors from abuse, made airplanes safer and are working tirelessly to provide police accountability and government transparency to protect our community and the public’s right to know.

Police Accountability

The Seattle Times investigative team, working with reporters on the metro staff, probed deeply into the Manuel Ellis case, a sidewalk stop that resulted in the death of a Tacoma man after officers tased him and used a chokehold on him. Our reporting helped lead to felony charges against three Tacoma police officers by the state Attorney General’s Office despite the Tacoma’s police’s botched investigation, a historic shift emphasizing the impact of visibility and persistent accountability. Seattle Times investigations also revealed poor oversight of tainted cops and loopholes in reform laws.

Public records and government transparency

The Seattle Times sued the city of Seattle for violating the Public Records Act after the city lost, withheld or destroyed records the Times had requested from Mayor Jenny Durkan, including text messages that by law were required to be retained. Our community relies on access to government records, which in this case could help explain how decisions were made at City Hall during the turbulent weeks of civil rights protests in the city. Our watchdog journalism fights for government transparency and citizens’ right to know. The Seattle Times also revealed that the $872 million Best Starts for Kids levy didn’t tell King County voters the full story, reported only on achievements (not “both achievements and failures,” as officials promised) and didn’t publicly report whether the programs achieved the goals they agreed to in contracts.

Sexual misconduct in Seattle restaurants

Celebrities are not exempt from accountability. The Seattle Times has extensively covered two-time James Beard Award-winning local chef and restaurant owner Edouardo Jordan. We also investigated allegations of sexual misconduct and unwanted touching against him from 15 different women. After our story published, nearly all of his restaurant staff quit, and Jordan posted a lengthy apology acknowledging for the first time that he “hurt and mistreated” many co-workers and subordinates.

Environmental journalism

As unprecedented climate change threatens our planet, The Seattle Times investigates environmental threats facing our region, including wildfires caused by crackling hot power lines. Residents have little recourse when power line fires burn down their homes. Washington lags behind other states in holding electric utilities accountable, despite decades of damage. Our work also helps prevent the next tragedy: Public officials claimed the Oso landslide was “unforeseen,” but we revealed there were decades of warning signs, and Gov. Inslee signed a bill requiring the state to share mapping of geologic hazards that threaten citizens.
